A symbolic step towards recovering the original Modernista silhouette
The restoration of the Casa Navàs tower is progressing with determination and anticipation. A key milestone has just taken place: the placement of the first stone of the new structure. Although symbolic, this moment marks the visible beginning of a phase that will bring back the building’s original design and architectural splendour.
The tower, located at the corner of Carrer de Jesús and Plaça del Mercadal in Reus, was destroyed in 1938 during the bombings of the Spanish Civil War. Its absence has left both a physical and symbolic void in the building and in the city’s architectural heritage. With this step, Casa Navàs reaffirms its commitment to restoring an essential element of the original design by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, recovering not only stonework but also memory and identity.
Over recent months, the technical team has made progress on the workshop phase: artisans have carved the stone pieces in Vinaixa, using the same quarry source chosen by Domènech i Montaner; the master glazier has prepared the stained-glass windows that will illuminate the new volume; and the master blacksmith has designed the iron elements that will crown the tower. With the first stone in place, the project enters a new stage on the actual structure, beginning with the assembly of the base, the installation of the metal reinforcement, and later the placement of blocks and finishes following the technical plan.
Casa Navàs has shared the entire process transparently, turning this restoration into an open exercise of cultural preservation. Through regular updates, visits, and digital content, visitors can follow the reconstruction of this Modernista feature from its foundations to its completion. This openness strengthens the public’s connection to the project and highlights the collective value of heritage.
The placement of the first stone represents more than construction progress: it reaffirms the building’s status as an icon of Modernisme and a vital part of Reus’ identity. Once the restoration is complete, Casa Navàs will regain not only its original appearance but also its ability to inspire admiration, welcome visitors, and reconnect with its past.
We invite all lovers of art, architecture, and the city to join us on this journey. Casa Navàs is preparing to see its tower rise again—majestic and true to its historical form. Very soon, visitors will be able to admire this emblematic element once more.
