Consul General of the People’s Republic of China Visits Casa Navàs

On 15 July, Casa Navàs had the pleasure of welcoming Meng Yuhong, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China, during her official visit to the city of Reus. The meeting provided an excellent opportunity to introduce her to one of the most emblematic buildings of Catalan Modernism and to share an essential part of the city’s historical, artistic and cultural heritage.

As a great admirer of Modernist architecture, Meng Yuhong was able to enjoy an experience specially prepared for the occasion. The programme included lunch at Casa Navàs, in a unique setting that brings together heritage, culture and hospitality in the heart of Reus.

Following lunch, the Consul General toured the different rooms of the building, where she discovered its history, architecture and the many decorative details that make Casa Navàs such an exceptional work of art. During the visit, she learned about the main features of the project designed by architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, as well as the work of the renowned craftspeople who contributed to its construction and decoration.

Built between 1901 and 1908 at the request of merchants Joaquim Navàs and Pepa Blasco, Casa Navàs is considered one of the finest examples of European Modernism. Its interior preserves an extraordinary wealth of ornamental elements, including mosaics, stained glass, ceramics, furniture, paintings and intricate woodwork.

All these elements come together in a harmonious artistic ensemble that reflects the importance of the decorative arts within the Modernist movement. Casa Navàs is particularly remarkable for the exceptional state of preservation of its original interiors, allowing visitors to experience the richness and detail of the period in an authentic setting.

Meng Yuhong’s visit highlighted the importance of preserving, promoting and making this cultural legacy accessible to visitors from around the world. It also helped to reinforce the role of Casa Navàs as a place for encounters, cultural exchange and international outreach.

Welcoming institutional representatives from other countries contributes to raising awareness of Reus’ heritage beyond the local area and encourages the creation of new cultural connections. In this respect, Casa Navàs continues to establish itself as an important destination for those interested in architecture, history, art and Modernism.

The Consul General’s interest throughout the tour also demonstrated the ability of cultural heritage to connect different societies and create opportunities for dialogue and mutual understanding. Architecture and the decorative arts become a shared language through which different traditions, perspectives and cultural sensitivities can come together.

Casa Navàs would like to thank Meng Yuhong for her visit, her warm presence and the interest she showed in the history and heritage of the building. It was an honour to welcome her and share such a special experience in one of Reus’ most representative cultural landmarks.

We would also like to express our special thanks to @baigesregidor for coordinating the welcome and the entire visit, making possible an event that helps promote Reus and its cultural heritage internationally.
