Casa Navàs will once again display one of its most emblematic architectural features. On Thursday 12 November, from 8:00 pm to 9:30 pm, Plaça del Mercadal will host the public inauguration of the reconstructed turret, known locally as the torratxa, under the title “The Return of a Symbol: Reus Touches the Sky Again”.
Supported by the Tarragona Provincial Council and Reus City Council, the event will allow Casa Navàs to share a historic milestone with the public, both for the building itself and for the city’s Modernist heritage.
The original turret was destroyed during the bombing of the Spanish Civil War in 1938. Almost nine decades later, its reconstruction has been made possible thanks to the commitment of MaserGrup, owner of the building, to gradually restore Casa Navàs to the appearance it had at the beginning of the 20th century.
An ambitious and complex architectural project
The reconstruction project was designed by Tous Arquitectes, while Constècnia has been responsible for carrying out the work. From the outset, the teams involved have faced a challenge of considerable technical, heritage and emotional complexity, particularly because of the expectations surrounding the recovery of this much-loved symbol among the people of Reus.
One of the main challenges was adapting the reconstruction to current safety regulations. For this reason, the turret incorporates an internal stainless-steel framework and a six-spoke base to provide greater strength, while remaining as faithful as possible to the original structure.
The characteristics of Vinaixa stone also had to be taken into account. As it is a soft and sandy material, great precision was required when installing the fixing elements and the internal structure.
An ongoing commitment to conservation
During the press conference, the director of Casa Navàs, Montse Grau, highlighted the importance of the preventive maintenance work being carried out throughout the building: “A Cultural Asset of National Interest such as Casa Navàs requires a continuous process of conservation and preservation.”
Throughout 2026, several improvements have been implemented, including repairs to water leaks and the installation of an indoor air extraction and renewal system to improve environmental conditions inside the building.
At the same time, specific work is being carried out on the marquetry elements, as well as the cleaning and inspection of the stained-glass windows, which are particularly delicate. In the coming weeks, an inventory and review of all wooden elements will also begin, with the aim of preventing potential damage caused by termites and woodworm.
The reconstruction of the turret represents an investment of approximately €1 million. According to Guillermo Mena, a representative of MaserGrup, around ten more years of work will be required to fully restore Casa Navàs to its original early 20th-century appearance.
The event on 12 November will mark the culmination of this important project and will include activities both before and after the official inauguration, with further details to be announced soon. Reus will thus recover an essential part of its skyline and a symbol that will once again rise above Plaça del Mercadal.
