On 22 October, the Casa Navàs Shop in Reus hosted the presentation of “El bestiari de Domènech i Montaner. Figuració i simbolisme”, a book written by Gemma Martí Rey. Organised by the Centre d’Estudis Lluís Domènech i Montaner (CEDIM), the event offered an opportunity to explore one of the most fascinating aspects of Catalan Modernism: the symbolism of animals in architecture.
The cultural gathering highlighted the extraordinary decorative richness of Lluís Domènech i Montaner’s work and the importance of understanding the hidden meanings behind his architectural creations.
Discovering the secrets of Domènech i Montaner’s bestiary
Lions, phoenixes and other real and imaginary creatures take centre stage in this publication, which examines animal representations throughout the architect’s buildings and projects.
The book explores how these figures, depicted in mosaics, stained-glass windows, sculptures and other decorative elements, go far beyond their aesthetic purpose. Each creature belongs to a rich visual language influenced by medieval art, cultural traditions and symbolic interpretations.
The research also examines the materials and artistic techniques used to create these representations, highlighting the essential contribution of the skilled craftspeople who helped bring Domènech i Montaner’s ideas to life.
Casa Navàs: a unique setting for celebrating Modernism
The presentation took place in a building closely connected to the architect’s artistic legacy. Built between 1901 and 1908, Casa Navàs is one of Europe’s most remarkable examples of Catalan Modernism, renowned for its exceptionally preserved interiors.
Its mosaics, stained-glass windows, sculptures and decorative details demonstrate how architecture and the decorative arts come together to create a unique artistic experience.
Hosting this presentation was another opportunity to connect historical research with the architectural heritage that continues to inspire visitors today.
