88 years later, Catalonia is reclaiming a piece of its history. The tower of Casa Navàs once again rises above the skyline of Reus, restoring one of the building’s most iconic architectural features and an essential part of our Modernista heritage. This historic milestone will be celebrated on Thursday 12 November at 8 pm, in Plaça del Mercadal, with a major public event that will mark a turning point in the history of Casa Navàs.
Under the title “The Return of a Symbol: Reus Touches the Sky Again”, the celebration will invite the entire community to witness a unique moment: the return of a piece of our heritage that disappeared almost nine decades ago.
88 years of absence, a story rising once again
On 26 March 1938, during the Spanish Civil War, a bomb struck Casa Navàs, destroying part of its roof, the decorative crowning feature of its façade and its distinctive tower. This event forever changed the silhouette of the building, designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner in the early 20th century.
Ever since, Plaça del Mercadal has been home to an incomplete Casa Navàs. Now, 88 years later, the reconstruction of the tower restores a fundamental part of its original architecture and brings back one of the most representative images of Reus’s Modernista past.
Far more than an architectural reconstruction, this project represents an act of remembrance, preservation and commitment to our history. It is a way of reaffirming the value of our heritage and restoring the splendour of a building that stands as a true landmark of Catalan Modernisme.
A reconstruction connecting past, present and future
The recovery of the tower has been made possible thanks to an ambitious heritage restoration project led by MaserGrup, the owner of Casa Navàs, with the involvement of specialist architects, restorers and craftspeople.
Through meticulous historical research, traditional craftsmanship and modern construction techniques, this distinctive architectural feature has been recreated with the greatest possible fidelity to its original design.
As a symbolic and commemorative gesture, the tower has been crowned with the senyera, the Catalan flag, following a long-established building tradition in Catalonia. The raising of the flag marks the successful completion of the reconstruction works without incident, while also paying tribute to Catalonia’s identity and architectural heritage. It is a meaningful gesture celebrating the recovery of a part of our history.
Following the reconstruction of the decorative crowning feature of the façade in 2020, the return of the tower marks another important milestone in the restoration of Casa Navàs’s original appearance and reinforces the commitment to preserving this legacy for future generations.
On 12 November, Reus will touch the sky again
Plaça del Mercadal will become the setting for a historic celebration taking place on Thursday 12 November 2026, at 8 pm.
The event will bring the entire community together to share in the excitement of a project whose significance extends far beyond Casa Navàs itself.
Because the return of the tower is not only a milestone for Reus, but also for the heritage of Catalonia as a whole. It represents the recovery of part of our identity, our architecture and our collective memory.
On 12 November, history will rise once again above Plaça del Mercadal.
The return of a symbol. A moment to remember. A story to share.
